Our Editorial Policy
Every Mortgage Owl guide aims to be accurate, up to date and easy to understand. This page explains how we research, write and maintain our content.
Who writes our guides.
Our guides are written by Steve, founder of Mortgage Owl, who is training as a mortgage and financial adviser and studying for CeMAP.
How we research.
We check facts, figures and rules against official and authoritative UK sources, including:
• The Bank of England (Bank Rate and housing data)
• The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)
• Money Helper, the government-backed money guidance service
• HM Revenue & Customs and GOV.UK (Stamp Duty Land Tax, the Lifetime ISA and other schemes)
• UK Finance and HM Land Registry (lending and house price data)
Where we use a figure or rule from a source, we link to it so you can check it yourself.
How we write.
• Plain English, with any jargon explained the first time it appears.
• Worked examples using realistic UK numbers.
• Balanced information on the pros and cons of each option.
• No pressure to enquire, and no promises about rates or approval.
Keeping guides up to date
Mortgage rules, rates and schemes change. Each guide shows the date it was last updated. We review our guides at least [every 6 or 12 months], and sooner when something important changes, such as a Bank Rate decision or a Budget announcement.
Corrections.
If you spot something wrong or out of date, please tell us, using the contact link in the footer. We'll check it and correct it promptly, and update the "Last updated" date.
Independence and how we're funded.
Our content is not paid for or written by lenders. [If applicable: Mortgage Owl may earn money from introductions to qualified advisers or from affiliate links.] This never influences what we write or which options we explain.
Not personal advice.
Our aricles and guides are general educational information only. They are not regulated financial advice and do not take your personal circumstances into account. Always speak to a qualified mortgage adviser before making a decision.
